a.r.t. lab is a practice centered around architecture, research, and teaching. 
The work focuses on the social and spatial dynamics of cities, productive urban landscapes, and comparative models of practice. Operating between the private and public realms, a.r.t. lab engages community organizations, academic groups, and private clients. The work has received funding from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Canada Council for the Arts, and Dalhousie University.
Under the guidance of Susan Fitzgerald, the work has been featured internationally at the Venice Architecture Biennale (2023) and the Lisbon Architecture Triennale (2022); included in exhibitions at MAAT (2022), RAIC Academic Summit, World Congress of Architects (2021); and published by UCL Press (2022), Routledge (2022), Refuge Press (2020), among others.

Susan Fitzgerald, Lead
Susan Fitzgerald is an Associate Professor of Architecture at Dalhousie University and the Design Director and Managing Partner at FBM. Originally from the UK, she is both an architect and an interior designer involved in teaching, research, and practice. Susan was made a fellow of the RAIC in 2015.
Susan completed her education at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, BC (BID) and Dalhousie University, NS (BEDS, M.Arch) where she was awarded the RAIC medal upon graduation in 1999. She received her PhD from the Bartlett School of Architecture - UCL, UK, in architectural design. She started her architectural career working for Arthur Erickson in Vancouver.
